About the Artist - Jeanne Coppel

Jeanne Coppel, born Jeanne Helder in Galați, Romania, on 16 May 1896, was one of the early pioneers of abstract art. As a child she studied under the Italian artist Antonio Zumino, who trained her classically in preparing canvases and mixing pigments. Those habits paid off: her careful technique is still visible in the freshness and unusually good preservation of her work. In 1912 she went to Berlin, where she often visited the Der Sturm gallery and encountered the most innovative movements of the day, including the Blaue Reiter expressionists, Cubism, the Delaunays' Orphism, and the Rayonism of Natalia Goncharova and Mikhail Larionov. Rayonism was a style in which objects were represented not through their shapes but through the rays of light reflecting off them. A fun fact from this period is that in 1914 she assisted on the Ballets Russes production of Le Coq d'Or in Monte Carlo, for which Goncharova designed the sets and costumes. 

One of the most interesting episodes in her life came out of hardship. During the First World War she had to shelter in a Moldavian village with no painting supplies. She found a stack of coloured tissue paper and used it to make her first abstract collages, inspired by Rayonism. After the war she settled in Paris in 1919 and joined the Ranson workshop, where she studied under Édouard Vuillard, Maurice Denis, and Paul Sérusier. She married Théodore Coppel in 1920, and their son Georges was born in 1922. History repeated itself during the Second World War. The family took refuge in Marseille and then Aix-en-Provence, and in 1942, in a situation much like 1916, she returned to collage, this time making freer and more complex compositions. She saw collage as a way to "depersonalize" her work and keep a kind of anonymity, because working without a brush freed her from its signature touch. 

She took up painting again after returning to Paris in 1946, making subtle oil paintings alongside her collages. Her first exhibition catalogue, in 1950, had a preface by the critic Michel Seuphor, and she went on to show regularly at Parisian galleries such as Galerie Arnaud. She moved in respected circles. The British artist Ben Nicholson, for example, gave her a signed drawing, possibly in exchange for one of her works. Coppel died in Paris on 1 November 1971. Her work is held by museums including the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the British Museum. Even so, she has been almost entirely overlooked by scholars and the art market, despite her influence on the development of modern art.
