About the Artist - Erich Heckel

Erich Heckel (1883–1970) was a German expressionist painter and printmaker, born on July 31, 1883, in Döbeln, Germany. He co-founded the influential Die Brücke (The Bridge) group in Dresden in 1905, alongside artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Heckel's early works, marked by bold colors and distorted forms, contributed significantly to the development of German expressionism.

Heckel, known for his woodcuts and lithographs, explored themes of urban life, nature, and the human figure. He participated in Die Brücke exhibitions and played a crucial role in the movement's growth. However, during World War I, he served in the military, which led to a temporary break with the group.

The Nazi regime later branded Heckel's work as "degenerate art," and he was expelled from the Prussian Academy of Arts in 1937. Many of his works were confiscated or destroyed. After the war, Heckel continued his artistic career, receiving various honors for his contributions to German art. Despite the controversies surrounding his work during the Nazi era, Heckel's legacy endures as a prominent figure in the expressionist movement. He passed away on January 27, 1970, in Radolfzell, Germany.
