About the Artist - Xavier Grau

Xavier Grau i Masip (1951 – 30 May 2020) was a Spanish painter known for his significant contributions to the Spanish art scene in the 1970s. Born in Barcelona, he played a key role in initiating discussions about Spanish art alongside artists such as Broto, Gonzalo Tena, and Javier Rubio. Together, they introduced the influential Trama magazine, serving as an art manifesto advocating for the autonomy of painting.

Grau's work is deeply rooted in abstract expressionism, drawing inspiration from the emotional and expressive power of this movement. Influenced by the New York Art School, particularly artists like De Kooning, Gorky, and Guston, Grau's paintings exhibit a unique abstraction that maintains internal tension between color and drawing. Unlike reducing color and surface movement, he crafted a style that resonated with emotional depth.

His art is featured in various museums and public collections, including Colección Los Bragales (Santander, Spain), Colección de Arte Contemporáneo “La Caixa” (Barcelona, Spain), MACBA Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (Barcelona, Spain), and MNCARS Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid, Spain). Xavier Grau passed away on May 30, 2020.
