About the Artist - Roger Tolmer

Roger Tolmer (March 1, 1908 – April 24, 1988) was a French painter and sculptor known for his diverse artistic journey. Born in Sotteville-lès-Rouen, Tolmer's early exposure to the Bonsecours basilica fueled his artistic talents. He initially aspired to be an architect but turned to painting, heavily influenced by Symbolism, Nabism, and Fauvism.

Tolmer served in Morocco in 1928, retracing the steps of Eugène Delacroix, a transformative experience for his artistic vision. Returning to France in 1930, he worked in architecture but exhibited his paintings for the first time in 1931. His artistic career flourished, with exhibitions in various countries.

Tolmer's style evolved over time, influenced by classical themes, expressionism, and abstraction. He formed connections with artists like Georges Braque and received acclaim for his work. In his later years, Tolmer delved into themes of dread and anxiety, creating impactful works like the monumental "Apocalypse." He continued to innovate until his death in 1988, leaving behind a legacy of diverse and introspective art.
