About the Artist - Alain Kirili
Alain Kirili (1946–2021) was a French-American sculptor born in Paris. At nineteen, during his early artistic training, he discovered David Smith's sculptures Cubi XVIII and Cubi XIX at the Musée Rodin and was immediately inspired, prompting a trip to the United States that same year, where he explored major museum collections and became drawn to abstract expressionist painting.
He began showing with the Sonnabend gallery in Paris in 1972, and in 1976, while traveling in Austria, developed a deep interest in blacksmithing that shaped his career. In 1977, the same year he married French photographer Ariane Lopez-Huici, he exhibited in Documenta VI and permanently settled in New York. He became known for post-minimalist abstract sculpture, working first in forged iron and later expanding into copper, aluminum, terra cotta, and other materials, with a strong emphasis on verticality, gesture, and tactility, often linked to jazz, calligraphy, and the body.
In 1986 he debuted his first major public work, Grand Commandement Blanc, at the Tuileries in Paris, and in 1992 unveiled the first piece in his monumental "Résistance" series of limestone sculptures. He had solo museum exhibitions at the Musée de l'Orangerie, the Musée Rodin, and the Brooklyn Museum, with work held in collections including MoMA, the Centre Pompidou, and the Jewish Museum. Kirili lived and worked between Paris and New York until his death in his New York loft in 2021.
