About the Artist - Louis Moilliet

Louis Moilliet (1880–1962) was a Swiss painter and stained-glass designer from Bern, trained as a decorative painter and later a master student of Hermann Haller in Stuttgart. He was lifelong friends with fellow artists Paul Klee and August Macke, having known Klee since childhood, and first traveled to Tunisia in 1908, where he met Macke, followed by a second trip in 1909/10. 

In 1911 he introduced Klee to the group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), and in 1914 he initiated the now-legendary "Tunisreise" alongside Klee and Macke. A journey that profoundly shaped all three artists' use of color and is remembered as a landmark moment in early 20th-century art. His own expressionist style was closely tied to the Orphism movement.

He continued traveling through North Africa between 1919 and 1921, and glass painting became the dominant medium of his later career. He eventually settled near Vevey, where he died in 1962. Today he's remembered both for his own watercolors and stained glass, and for his pivotal role linking Klee and Macke.
