About the Artist - David Allgood

David Alan Allgood (1947–2026) was an American artist, publisher, and environmental advocate whose life joined creative work with civic purpose. Born in Vallejo, California, to Ben and Dorthilee Allgood, he served in the Air Force from 1966 to 1972 as a Russian language interceptor, where he formed a friendship with Roy Williams that lasted more than fifty years. As a young artist, Allgood helped develop the fine art embossed serigraph, a printmaking technique that gives screen prints subtle raised texture and depth, and his botanical and natural subjects, from irises and daffodils to cactus flowers and conch shells, became familiar pieces of late-1970s and 1980s design. In 1980 he founded Mind's Eye Studio, an art publishing company in Los Angeles that produced and marketed limited editions of his own work and that of other artists he felt deserved support, and he pushed for artists' rights and safety in the city's downtown lofts. After a decade he closed the studio to devote himself to politics, eventually serving as Executive Director of the California League of Conservation Voters (now California Environmental Voters) and organizing progressive coalitions for clean air, clean water, and against corporate influence in state politics. Remembered as a Renaissance man with a sharp mind for debate, a sense of humor, and a gift for bringing people together, he loved history, especially World War II, as well as art, music, baking pies, his friends, and his dogs. He is survived by his companion of more than forty years.
