About the Artist - Finn Sködt

Finn Sködt (1944–2019) was a Danish graphic artist and textile designer based on the Helgenæs peninsula, where he ran his home studio. He trained at the Graphic Institute of Denmark in Copenhagen, having first spent time at the Aarhus Academy of Fine Arts, and went on to work across a wide range of disciplines: graphic design, painting, sculpture, and color composition, alongside his textile practice.

He's best known for the upholstery and curtain fabrics he designed for the Danish textile company Kvadrat starting in the early 1980s, where he built a reputation for his precise, intuitive sense of color. His typical method was to begin with the three primary colors and work outward from there into subtler hues and combinations. This grounding in graphic art gave his textiles and prints a shared visual language, clean, vivid, and pared-back, with a particular fondness for ultramarine blue that became something of a signature. He described color as inherently restless, noting that blue especially always seemed to be moving somewhere.

Sködt's work has been included in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and his textile designs remain part of Kvadrat's catalog today, reflecting the lasting influence of his color-driven approach on Scandinavian design.
