About the Artist - Jacques Monory
Jacques Monory (1924-2018) was a French painter and filmmaker known for his cinematic approach to art, often exploring themes of violence, alienation, and existential angst. Born in Paris, Monory was a leading figure in the Narrative Figuration movement of the 1960s, which emerged as a counterpoint to abstract art. His works are instantly recognizable for their blue monochromatic palette, which he used to evoke a sense of detachment and melancholy.
Monory’s paintings often resemble film stills, depicting scenes filled with suspense and mystery. He was deeply influenced by American culture, particularly film noir, and his art frequently featured imagery like guns, cars, and urban landscapes. One fascinating anecdote about Monory is his practice of staging and photographing scenes before painting them, treating his canvases like film sets to create a narrative within each piece.
In addition to painting, Monory was also a filmmaker, directing avant-garde films that mirrored the themes in his visual art. His work has been exhibited worldwide, and he is regarded as one of the most important French artists of the 20th century. Monory’s distinctive style continues to influence contemporary artists, keeping his legacy alive in the world of visual storytelling.
