About the Artist - Frederic Menguy
Frédéric Menguy, born in Paris in 1927, initially pursued a career in accounting before following his passion for drawing and painting. After attending evening classes in Paris, he entered the École normale d'enseignement du dessin in 1951 and later taught drawing. However, in 1956, he decided to focus entirely on painting, aligning himself with the expressionist tradition of artists like Bernard Buffet and André Minaux.
Menguy's early work reflected the post-war pessimism, with dark and somber paintings. His first exhibitions took place in 1957, and he married Nicole Allardin in 1958. His artistic evolution led him to abstract landscape painting, influenced by Nicolas de Stael. In 1966, after discovering the Corbières region, Menguy settled in Villeneuve-la-Rivière, where he embraced colorful figuration. His later works featured vibrant cypress landscapes, dreamlike depictions of femininity, and scenes from the circus world, including clowns and horse rides.
Despite the festive themes, Menguy's paintings concealed a nostalgia for childhood, as noted by art critic Patrice de La Perrière. Frédéric Menguy passed away in March 2007, shortly after his wife, leaving behind a legacy of poetic and emotionally charged artwork.
