About the Artist - Giorgio Morandi

Giorgio Morandi (1890–1964) was born in Bologna, Italy, and spent nearly his entire life there, rarely traveling and living for much of his career in the same modest apartment on Via Fondazza with his three sisters. He enrolled at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna in 1907, and though he was exposed early on to avant-garde currents, including Cubism, Futurism, and the work of Cézanne, he gradually withdrew from these movements to pursue a much quieter, more introspective path. In the early 1910s he briefly aligned himself with the Metaphysical painting movement associated with Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà, absorbing its sense of stillness and mystery, though he soon moved away from its overt symbolism toward something more austere and personal.

For the rest of his life, Morandi devoted himself almost obsessively to a narrow range of subjects: still lifes of bottles, jars, boxes, and vases arranged on a tabletop, along with occasional landscapes painted near his family's summer home in Grizzana (a town later renamed Grizzana Morandi in his honor). He worked and reworked the same humble objects, often dusty, muted in tone, and coated in paint to dull their reflections, endlessly varying their arrangement, spacing, and light to explore subtle shifts in form, volume, and perception. His palette was famously restrained, built from soft grays, ochres, browns, and whites, and his brushwork grew increasingly spare and meditative over the decades.

Morandi taught printmaking at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna for many years and was also an accomplished etcher, producing a substantial body of prints alongside his paintings. Despite the narrowness of his subject matter, his work earned significant international recognition during his lifetime, including a room dedicated to him at the 1948 Venice Biennale, and he came to be regarded as one of the most important Italian artists of the 20th century. He continued painting in his quiet, disciplined manner until his death in Bologna in 1964, leaving behind an oeuvre often described as a lifelong meditation on simplicity, repetition, and the poetry of ordinary things.
