About the Artist - Pablo Echaurren

Pablo Echaurren (born 1951), son of Chilean surrealist Roberto Matta and Italian actress Angela Faranda, is an artist influenced by Dada. Despite the surname resulting from a clerical error, he maintained it professionally. Gianfranco Baruchello, not Matta, was his primary artistic mentor. Echaurren's diverse works span painting, ceramics, illustration, comics, and writing, blending "high" and "low" culture in a Dadaist fashion. He collaborated with leftist publications, designed book covers, and created avant-garde comics. Exhibiting since the 1970s, his anthological exhibitions have been held globally. In 2010, he co-founded the Fondazione Echaurren Salaris. A lover of electric basses, he showcased his vintage collection in 2009. Echaurren's extensive writings and drawings were acquired by Yale University in 2014. Various retrospectives in 2016 and 2017 commemorated his contributions to the countercultural movement. In 2019, a solo show at Mart (Rovereto) further highlighted his artistic journey. In 2020, Bibliotheca Hertziana acquired a significant section of his archive.
