About the Artist - Ron Hinson

Ron Hinson was born in 1934 in Ohio and went on to earn both a BFA and an MFA from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He spent much of his career teaching studio art, art history, and humanities at the college level across Kentucky, Illinois, Idaho, and Washington, and his teaching journey eventually brought him to the Pacific Northwest, where he taught at South Puget Sound Community College and The Evergreen State College in his later years.

As an artist, Hinson was best known for large, wall-hung painted constructions with a graphic, textured quality, built up by layering oil crayon and acrylic paint, the latter often applied with a sponge. Roughly once a year he set that work aside to produce a series of more illustrational paintings, a deliberate change of pace from his signature constructions. His work earned public recognition through the Washington State Arts Commission's Art in Public Places Collection, placing his paintings in public settings around the state he came to call home.

Ron Hinson died in 2019. The Leonor R. Fuller Gallery at South Puget Sound Community College, which held a dozen of his donated and purchased paintings across its Olympia and Lacey campuses, mourned him publicly as both an artist and a teacher, a fitting tribute to a career built as much on shaping other artists in the classroom as on shaping paint on canvas.
