About the Artist - Fritz Winter
Fritz Winter (1905-1976) was a German abstract painter and sculptor associated with the Concrete Art movement. Born in Germany, he initially trained as an architect but later turned to painting. Winter played a significant role in the development of abstract art, particularly geometric abstraction.
In the 1920s, Winter studied at the Bauhaus under artists like Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, influencing his artistic direction. He later faced persecution during the Nazi era, and some of his works were deemed "degenerate art."
After World War II, Winter resumed his artistic career, participating in various exhibitions and gaining international recognition. He became known for his use of vibrant colors and geometric shapes in non-representational compositions. Winter's work evolved, incorporating both painting and sculpture.
Notably, his artistic journey reflects the tumultuous times he lived in, from the avant-garde experimentation of the Bauhaus to the challenges of Nazi censorship. Winter's contributions to abstract art and his perseverance in the face of adversity mark him as a significant figure in 20th-century art.
