About the Artist - Biagio Civale
Biagio Civale, also known as "Gino," is an Italian-American painter, printmaker, sculptor, and poet born in Italy in 1935. He is an internationally known artist who has been creating art for over 50 years, exhibiting in more than 60 one-man shows and 200 group events in the United States and abroad. He studied mixed media art throughout Europe, debuting at age 19 with his first exhibition in Rome and later gaining recognition in Paris with a solo show at Galerie Chardin. He studied at L'Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris and received a diploma from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, later continuing his studies at New York University and SUNY.
Civale was born in Italy but has also lived in France, Belgium, Spain, and the United States. During his early career he exhibited across Europe, joined the Italian Association of Engravers, and became the first Western artist to sell work in Hangzhou, China. His work is held in notable collections, including those of Ronald Lauder, the World Bank in Washington, D.C., and the Castello Sforzesco in Milan. His output has been prolific and thematically wide-ranging, touching on subjects like motherhood, exodus, suffering, and the beauty of nature, and spanning media from oil painting to screenprints, linocuts, and woodcuts.
In 1987, Civale moved to Yonkers, New York, where he became a key figure in the Westchester arts community, and he currently maintains studios in both New York and Italy. In November 2025, he was honored as a Distinguished Citizen of Westchester County for his contributions to the arts, and gifted a collection of eight murals to New York Medical College.
