He worked in advertising for several years before running his own design studio by the 1970s. In late 1975 he began working with ABBA, designing the Swedish sleeve for their Greatest Hits album. The following year he created the band’s famous logo with the backwards B, which he intended to represent the two couples in the group: each B (Björn and Benny) turned toward an A (Agnetha and Anni-Frid). He went on to design every ABBA album sleeve from Arrival in 1976 through the posthumous ABBA Live in 1994. He was also the visual architect for the band’s 1977 European and Australian tour and their 1979 North American and European tour, and he designed the set for the second international tour.

Several of his sleeve ideas are documented. His common-law wife at the time, Lillebil Ankarcrona, suggested the title Arrival. The Super Trouper cover featured the band surrounded by friends, acquaintances, and real circus performers. For The Visitors, he treated the “visitors” as angels, which led to the group posing in front of an angel painting. He also reportedly arranged the helicopter photo shoot for Arrival.

Beyond ABBA, Söderqvist worked as an art director, graphic designer, illustrator, and in advertising, and after the ABBA years he continued as a designer and also achieved success as an artist. Radio Sweden reported his death on 1 September 2014, after a brief illness, at the age of 79.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/0956/6386/files/1980sRuneSoderqvistMetallicSignedLithographFullView.heic?v=1791839195
