He went on to earn a B.S. in Art in 1968 and an M.F.A. in 1971, both from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and since 1971 he has lived and worked from his studio in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin. Working as an abstract, geometric, and Op Art painter and printmaker, he builds his own canvases by hand, using high-quality redwood exclusively for the stretcher bars of his paintings.

Over the course of his career Spalatin has taken part in more than 70 solo exhibitions across North America, Europe, and the Middle East, and his work has entered the permanent collections of major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Musée d'Art Moderne, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art. His paintings and prints, with titles like "Figure XXXVI," "Kornati," "Matrix VI," and "Mitla," reflect a sustained interest in geometric abstraction, bold color, and rhythmic, precise composition. A major retrospective of his work, "Marko Spalatin: A Retrospective, 1970-1995," was held at the Butler Institute of American Art in Warren, Ohio, in 1995, surveying a quarter-century of his output.
