About the Artist - Leonor Fini

Leonor Fini (1907–1996) was an Argentine-Italian surrealist painter, illustrator, and writer. Born in Buenos Aires, she moved to Europe in the 1930s, establishing herself in the Parisian art scene. Fini's work often featured fantastical and dreamlike elements, exploring themes of sexuality, identity, and the subconscious. She associated with prominent surrealists like Salvador Dalí and Max Ernst but resisted formal membership in any artistic movement. Known for her strong, independent personality, Fini challenged traditional gender roles, both in her art and life. Her diverse body of work includes paintings, book illustrations, and theatrical costume designs, contributing to the avant-garde art world of the 20th century.
